A contract for the design and supply of two new slewing and
luffing stackers at the Worsley alumina refinery at Collie in south-west WA has
been awarded to minerals processing and materials handling specialists,
FLSmidth Minerals.
The contract includes design, engineering and equipment
supply. The company will also undertake supervision of the constructions and
commissioning phases of the contract period.
Each with a design capacity of 4,100 tph and an operating
capacity of 3,400 tph, the new stackers will be installed as part of a multi-million
dollar upgradeand expansion for the Worsley facility.
The FLSmidth group has been consolidating its materials
handling technologies worldwide with a number of recent acquisitions by its
FLSmidth Minerals division.
Based on similar stacker/reclaimer systems member companies
of the group (including FLSmidth Koch and FLSmidth MVT) have designed and
installed in Europe and Africa, the system at
Worsley will include improvements to overall design and operation.
Designed to utilize some of the site’s existing
infrastructure, Worsley’s new stacke4rs will include a main portal gantry
supporting a slewing superstructure with a luffing boom conveyor. Boom
balancing is based on the proven Bascule-type design with hydraulic hoist. The
counterweight is integrated into the luffing system which means the boom only
has to compensate differential movements, with no compromising of machine
stability.
To eliminate any clumping usually associated with bauxite
storage and handling, unique feed chutes will be designed and developed for the
Worsley system.
Design and engineering work is already well advanced. The first
stacker will be installed early in 2010 and the second unit will follow later
the same year.
